History and Overview
Initially founded in April 2002, to provide support to restaurant workers displaced from the World Trade Center as a result of the September 11th tragedy, ROC-NY has expanded to advocate for improved working conditions for restaurant workers citywide. To improve working conditions and raise standards in the industry, ROC-NY created a multi-pronged strategy to surround the industry; in particular, we:
i. Engage in WORKPLACE JUSTICE CAMPAIGNS to force exploitative restaurant owners to provide just working conditions to their workers;
ii. Conduct RESEARCH AND POLICY to inform ourselves and the community about the state of the industry, including pervasive issues affecting workers and putting a damper on the industry's reputation;
iii. Promote the HIGH ROAD to profitability and holding up ‘high road' employers as models to the restaurant industry;
iv. Provide unique and free front of the house and back of the house TRAINING to thousands of restaurant workers or those seeking employment in restaurants.
